Skiing re-starts

By | Category: Travel destinations

Some of the big ski resorts such as Val D’Isere, St Moritz, Kitzbuhl, Zermatt and Meribel have re-opened after having lost almost two seasons to the pandemic.

In comparison to the 800 or so snow resorts in Europe, the number that are open is still small but a sure sign that they have confidence in opening.

All have stringent health protocols in place to protect holidaymakers and staff. All have ski lifts back in operation since some last season -such as in France – were closed.

Will the new ski season see a return to what we like to think of as a “normal” season?

If you had asked me this a week ago I would have said yes. With the announcement of the new omicrom variant, I am not so sure. It all depends on how long it takes medical boffins to determine what effect omicom might have.

Many of the resorts have little snow at the base (such as Zermatt) but have much more a higher levels – Zermatt has about 150 cms, Kitzsteinhorn has 140 cms and Andermatt in central Switzerland has 130 cms. Some resorts however, have only 20cms or less at this early part of the season.

For the present, both Austria and Slovakia have lockdowns and Italy has a requirement for you to show a COVID pass in order to enter hotels and other public spaces so -at least for the next couple of weeks – skiers going on holidays will have no feeling of normalcy even on the slopes.

The requirement for returning passengers to the UK to have a PCR test and self-isolation until at least December 18th might deter some travellers but some avid skiers can’t wait to return.

Some that were due to open like Lech, Seefeld and St Anton in Austria will have to wait until the Austrian lockdown ends.

Nonetheless, skiers can look forward to Chamonix, Courchevel and Meribel in France; Corvara, La Thuile and Sestriere in Italy as well as Nendaz and Villars opening in Switzerland next weekend.
