Belfast and Ryanair – again!

Ryanair has announced that it will cease flying on all its routes from Belfast International by the end of October and Belfast City in about three weeks’ time.

Ryanair – saying goodbye to Belfast – again!

This comes after it only returned to Belfast in June amid much fanfare and that it was due to successful vaccination numbers.

The reason it is leaving is “APD and a lack of “recovery incentives” from Belfast International and Belfast City airports.”

It may not have been obvious to Ryanair but APD has been around for years and was there when the airline announced its reduction in flights in 2019. It blamed APD then as well but that didn’t stop it returning.

So we can pretty much say that APD is an excuse rather than the main reason.

Maybe recovery incentives are the reason since we don’t know what the Northern Irish government has in place to support an airline like Ryanair that takes passengers internationally as opposed to domestic routes.
Or could it be that Ryanair looked at its sums again and decided it could make money on other routes?

The whole episode begs the question of whether if you were an import would be interested in having Ryanair operating from it.

It must be tempting to tell Ryanair the next time it says it wants to operate from one of the airports to tell them to take a run and jump! Its not commercially clever but wouldn’t it be satisfying!
