Using the NHS app

By | Category: Travel tips & opinions

With elections only recently over in Scotland and Wales it means that the governments in those two nations are playing catch-up with decisions taken by the Westminster government about England.

The NHS proof of vaccination card with details on the reverse side is a standby to the smart phone app

Now that all nations have adopted the traffic light system and that the same destinations appear on the green list the next point to be faced by travellers is working out what restrictions have been applied by the governments of those places on incoming visitors.

The very first requirement is an ability to show that you have been vaccinated, preferably having received all the jabs that are the course of the particular drug that have received (two jabs for most of us, one for a few) or received a PCR test in the last 72 hours or have a notification that we do not need a jab.

How all this information is recorded and available to both the UK government’s Border Force and similar forces in other destinations we might visit has yet to be resolved.

Obviously the app applies to smart phones and the government advises travellers to register with the app before booking international travel. Those without one can get a paper document confirming their vaccine status by ringing 119. In addition and if relevant they should take PCR test results on paper as well.

The government recommends not using NHS facilities for PCR testing so the assumption is that, even those with smart phones and using the NHS app will require another app or a paper copy showing that they have had a PCR test where it is required either to enter a destination or return to the UK.

As a back-up to your phones  having a flat battery or not getting a signal, do take your vaccination card with you showing the dates you were vaccinated and the brand of jab you had.

The level of incorrect documentation is something that the Border Force boss, Paul Lincoln, drew attention to in the Downing Street press briefing last week. That obviously delays your journey through the airport in the first place so check and double check what you require to the destination that are travelling to this summer.
