Last night he Welsh government announced that self- contained accommodation can open up for business again from tomorrow, Saturday.

Snowdonia will see more visitors this Easter but they will be those living in Wales

That means that caravan, camping, static home, holiday cottages and those hotels, guest houses and B&B’s that provide self-contained accommodation can re-open   for holidays and the Easter holiday season. That includes hotels that have private facilities in their rooms and where they can deliver meals to the room rather than people having to go down to restaurants.

Coming with this reduction in rules is the fact that the “stay-local” rule which has existed in Wales for such a short time after the tighter “stay-at-home” rule has been lifted so those leaving in Wales can now freely travel anywhere in Wales.

Will Welsh residents now flock for a Welsh staycation? There are many that tourism organisations that rely on English visitors for their business and there is some concern that many sites won’t open because it will be uneconomic to do so.

I think that they will find Welsh residents will be on the phone and online this morning to snap up opportunities to leave their four walls and have a break.

Wales has had a tougher lockdown than many places because the 2stay-at-home” rules existed for such a long time. That is another reason why I think that Welsh residents will travel.

Those taking breaks will not find that everything is back to normal. Cafes, pubs and restaurants can still not re-open for a couple of weeks and many gardens and heritage sites are closed. Some heritage can re-open but we don’t know which. Even in my village, locals haven’t been able to walk in the castle for exercise since last March as the gates have remained locked.

But the Welsh government and the other home nations will be watching what happen in Wales. Just as when schools re-opens there was a thought that there would be an upturn in the number of cases, so there might be an increase as people move around.

If case numbers do not rise then the other home nations may bring forward their travel rules.
