Visiting Penzance

It has been a while since I stayed in Penzance during a touring holiday around the foot of Cornwall.

Since my visit, the cultural heritage of the town and the area has been enhanced by the opening almost ten years ago of the Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens, now one of the big attractions of the area along with St Michael’s Mount, Chysauster Ancient Village, The Minack open air theatre and Porthcurno which was once the largest and most important telegraph station in the world

During all the years since it seems that, like many places, it has become a little run-down due to a lack of investment. It’s a common complaint about many coastal towns.

That, it is hoped, will change if £25 million become available to both the town and nearby Newlyn.

It is planned to open up the waterfront and to prioritise pedestrians and cyclists whilst also encouraging green transport.

In the middle of Penzance is Market House and the plan is to develop the empty part of it, renovating the market hall to create a flexible indoor space hosting markets, community and private events; and on the upper and lower floors to create much needed small retail spaces, a café and modern work space. Larger shops around it will be subdivided to create affordable smaller units which should lead to more independent shops – the sort of shops that visitors always say they prefer when you ask them

Newlyn village centre and its connections to the Prom will become more pedestrian and cycle friendly. Local visitor attractions like the Newlyn School of Art and Newlyn Art Gallery which are known the world over for their contribution to artistic heritage will be improved as will other visitor attractions like the Gardener’s House that sits in Morrab Gardens, Penlee House and The Exchange.

Down on the waterfront, the path between Marazion and Penzance will be improved and a vacant site on the prom will become a year round indoor activity facility.

That is the plan as suggested but will it come to pass? It should find out next month
