Parma gets another year

The Italian city of Parma was initially awarded this recognition for 2020. But like so much in this irrational year, the pandemic has played havoc with events so it’s reign has been extended until the end of next year.

It also gives the city and the Emilia Romagna region in  which it is situated another opportunity to add extra events in the hope that come the new year many more of us will have the opportunity of visiting the region instead of being in a variety of different lockdowns.

Parma’s stint as Italian Capital of Culture 2021 will also highlight other cultural activities in the region of Emilia Romagna, such as Piacenza and Reggio Emilia.

Parma is primarily known for two things, its Parma ham (Prosciutto di Parma) and Parmigiano Reggiano cheese.

The organisers though, are concentrating on the cultural opportunities rather than the food although Parma is a city of gastronomy. A local tour of many of the producers will only cost you €18!

Needless to say more is in the city to attract the tourist and a new app called Parma 2020+21, not only features information about what to see, do and eat in Parma, but also a booking system to purchase tickets and an innovative tool to monitor queues at the different event venues so users can visit at quieter times. Travellers to Parma in 2021 can also benefit from the Parma Card, a visitor pass that gives unlimited access to bike sharing.

Parma was at the centre of several wars during the 14th and 15th centuries, part of the Papal States in the 16th century and annexed to France in the early 19th century. It also has one of the oldest universities in the world as well as being renowned for its theatre and music scenes. Verdi, was born in Busseto, near Parma and provided the city with one of its biggest tourist draws –the Verdi Festival which takes place across both cities every year in September/October to celebrate his music.

Surely by September/October next year there will be effective vaccines allowing us to travel there?
