Renewing travel insurance

By | Category: Travel tips & opinions

Into my in-box this week rolled my annual travel policy renewal notice.

In these times it is even more important to check your cover?

It reminded me that having been unable to travel for many months because of national and government advice, I wasn’t really reaping any benefits from renewing it just yet.

Here in my part of Wales, the advice is that we should only travel with a good reason and the government has stated that travel and holidays are not counted as good reasons.

Many of us are in a similar position so is there any reason to renew your travel insurance?

The answer is probably not especially if your renewal notice, like mine, showed a 20% increase in price. It also includes a 5% renewal discount so the actual percentage increase is higher than at first sight.

Despite the fact that few of us in comparison to previous years, the price of good travel insurance probably has to rise in order to take into account the potential  addition costs of dealing with coronavirus.

But from now on it has become doubly important that you check your policies to make sure that you are covered for at least the following which all related to the coronavirus;

1 If you need to cancel your holiday due to you or anyone named on your policy testing positive.

2 If you’re prevented entry at the airport due to detected and diagnosed symptoms.

3 If you need to go into self-quarantine abroad

4 If you fall ill with Covid-19 abroad and need medical treatment abroad.

5 If you fall ill with Covid-19 abroad and need to be repatriated to the UK.

6 Cancellation if the FCDO or your devolved government advises against travel.

My renewal policy doesn’t cover me for items three or six so I won’t be renewing at any time. Instead I will shop around but it isn’t easy to find policies that cover all six.

We have spent the last ten days delving into policies and have yet to find one that would suit everyone. The best so far has been for under those aged 59 but we’ll keep looking and report back when we finish.

So concerned are we about the lack of comprehensive insurance cover that is widely available we have included a question on  what you would and from travel insurance on a survey that we are undertaking in conjunction with the University of Westminster and the Online Buying Club.

We would welcome your thoughts. You can complete the ten question survey clicking here or going to
