Kuoni bets on UK holidays

At last one of the mainstream tour operators has realised that there is a market for domestic holidays amongst its portfolio.

Orkney is one of the UK and Irish destinations on offer from Kuoni

Kuoni has announced a tie-up with McKinlay Kidd, a company which has been creating tailor-made holidays throughout the UK and Ireland for over fifteen years.

Ever since the number of staycations started rising a few years ago I have been asking why none of the large tour operators haven’t jumped on the bandwagon since UK holidays can provide better profit margins for companies. You might have thought that Brexit alone would encourage some companies to create holiday packages but no, that didn’t seem to be the spark either.

A virus and the government’s advice that we shouldn’t travel abroad might have been the trigger to encourage Kuoni. It will be interesting to see how many competitors follow suit since companies have a habit of  copying anything that is successful.

Launched last Friday, the holidays that Kuoni will offer vary from luxury offerings to family oriented deals all of which can be tailored to customer requirements.

These holidays aren’t just on offer from 2021. They are for 2020 as well suggesting that Kuoni thinks that there will be a summer holiday season for us in the UK and Ireland.

Trips which can be booked include the Causeway Coast in Northern Ireland; islands of the Scottish coastline including the Orkneys and Shetlands and Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way.

In England offers include the Isles of Scilly; Devon and Cornwall road trips; rural Northumberland, which is the largest area of protected dark sky in Europe and ideal for stargazing, and a five-star Aston Martin 007 weekend in Scotland discovering locations from past Bond movies.

The holidays on offer are modest in number compared to the company’s travel offers in the rest of the world but I shouldn’t begrudge them as it is a start. It is more than TUI, the late Thomas Cook, Jet2.com and BA Holidays have ever provided for us.
