Holidaying again in Mallorca

Destinations are doing little at the moment other than posting virtual tours of their attractions and hotspots.

One of the tourist attractions of Palma in Mallorca – La Seu cathedral. Will it see many tourists this year?

What’s the point? People can’t travel so why promote?

But if, by and large, they aren’t promoting they are at least preparing for when the lockdowns end. But as they undo the chains manacling their own citizens, attracting international travellers is way down the list.

Take the Balearic island of Mallorca for example and a popular destination for Britons. About a third of all visitors come from the UK so it is important to the island.

Earlier this week, the president of the Council of Majorca, Catalina Cladera, said that as soon as possible tourism should be re-started but only in a safe way.

What does she mean by this?

“It is clear that we cannot wait for a vaccine in order to restart the economy,” she said and the island cannot give up a summer season to not having visitors.

She is proposing that the first thing to re-start will be domestic Mallorcan tourism and visits from the other Balearic Islands. Then will come opening the island up to Spaniards living on the mainland and, finally, overseas visitors be allowed to enter.

The same approach is being suggested by another Balearic island – Menorca.

For tourism organisations, locals travelling around the islands might give business to attractions and restaurants but will it provide business for hoteliers and other accommodation providers?

Given that the lockdown in Spain is scheduled to run at least into early May, any staggered opening of the islands to tourism will probably not come early enough to make much of a difference to the summer season.

Luckily – although I am not sure that is the right word – Mallorca and the other Balearic islands are seen as an all-year round destination so the Autumn and winter may prove a lifesaver to the islands.
