Forget the orange juice

What has possessed TUI to move its flights to Orlando from Orlando-Sanford to the incongruously named Orlando-Melbourne International?

Just how long do you want to spend travelling from an airport to Walt Dinsey World Resort? Or Universal?

It must be incentives from the state of Florida, from the airport, lower landing charges or something like that because otherwise why would you inconvenience your passengers by taking them further away from the sites they are planning to visit.

This is akin to Ryanair flying to Frankfurt Hahn instead of Frankfurt proper and we all know how comedians and critics have made fun of the airline for doing that.

For the next few years existing TUI passengers going to Orlando need not worry. The switch won’t take place until 2022.

But lest future TUI passengers feel that they will suffer as a result of the change let me set your minds at rest. The airline says that holidaymakers will be met by “a team of international ambassadors with a glass of fresh Florida orange juice and assisted with any onward arrangements.”

Orange juice will make up for having to travel 75 miles to Walt Disney World Resort?  It is an extra 32 miles more than if you flew into Orlando-Sanford? Flying to Tampa International is even closer by a mile or two but the closest is Orlando International just 16 miles away..

After a long flight from the UK do passengers really want to spend the best part of another hour before they reach their destination?

TUI says that, quite correctly, Orlando Melbourne International is building a new terminal extension and there will be “family friendly features.” Oddly enough, Orlando-Sanford is also expanding and it is going to put a heritage PV1 Ventura Bomber in the terminal to attract passengers and give them something to view.

Which will appeal more to passengers? The truth is they may not have a choice. Other airlines though may be thinking of staying at Orlando-Sanford or Orlando- International.

After all, do you you really want to make life more difficult for their passengers by moving even further away from where most passengers flying into the Orlando area want to go – Universal, Walt Disney World Resort and Kissimmee.
