Although the last “major” of the golf season has been played a while ago, many golfers look to extend the home season by heading to warmer climes.

One such place that is becoming increasing popular is the Portuguese capital of Lisbon, largely because there are some twenty courses from which to choose which provide a range of landscapes such as ocean, beaches, rivers, cliffs, dunes and lakes.

In conjunction with Turismo de Lisboa, here are just five you might consider.

Belas Clube De Campo

Just 30 minutes north east of Lisbon, the Belas Clube De Campo’s golf course is located between the towns of Belas and Vale De Lobo. The course, which was designed by the American architect Rocky Roquemore is set in a valley. Its varied terrain makes the course a challenge for golfers of all levels, and visiting golfers are encouraged to try out its standout hole named the ‘Serpentine’, which has a stream dissecting the fairway.

 Quinta da Marinha

Located in Cascais, the Quinta da Marinha Golf Course has 18 holes set within 5,870 metres of plush fairway. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, (the father not the son,) the course offers views across the Atlantic Ocean and the Sintra Mountains. In true Robert Trent Jones style, there are many elevated greens and tees, bunkers and water hazards, making it a more demanding course than most.

Paço do Lumiar

The Paço do Lumiar golf course is just 15 minutes from Lisbon’s downtown. The nine-hole golf course comprises seven par threes and two par fours, and is the fifth biggest golf club in Portugal. The course also benefits from a two tier 32 bay floodlit, covered driving range and is to USGA sandard.

Penha Longa

The Penha Longa Golf Course is listed as one of the top 30 courses in Continental Europe by the Golf World Awards. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr, it has challenging fairways and picturesque greens. Famous as one of the top courses in Europe, Penha Longa appeals to golfers of every level, from amateur to professional and champion. It also has a Michelin star restaurant.

Praia D’El Rey

Praia d’El Rey is an award-winning 18-hole course. Designed by Cabell B. Robinson and surrounded by pine trees, this course has views across the Atlantic and the Berlengas Islands. The course has a deeply contrasting terrain with deep bunkers, dunes and forests. Located in Amoreira, Obidos, Praia D’El Rey is 50 minutes north of Lisbon.

One of the advantages of playing golf in Lisbon is that it has so many regional connections, removing the need to spend so much time getting to and from London. Flights link Lisbon with Birmingham, Bristol, Dublin, Edinburgh, Gatwick, Glasgow, Heathrow, Liverpool, Luton, Manchester and Stansted. A service from  London City begins on October 29th.
