Barbados comes to London

Barbados and Liverpool

If you are in London this weekend, head for South Molton Street where the tourist authority for the Caribbean island of Barbados will present a three day, free extravaganza it calls a Taste of Barbados.

Primarily it is to celebrate Bajan culture, cuisine, music, art and rum. It also acts as an enticement to encourage us to book a holiday in Barbados.

The South Molton street event evokes the festival appearance so reminiscent of the island. Barbados has two major festivals during the year, the first in July and August called Crop Over festival and the other in November – The Food and Rum Festival that attracts people from not only the Caribbean but from  around the world.

Returning to the South Molton street event, chefs will be preparing those Bajan dishes each day leading to a cook-off on Sunday when Jason Howard and Anthony Cumberbatch create their own masterpieces.

This will surprise readers; there will be a rum masterclass with tastings run by Miguel Smith, an Ambassador for Mount Gay Rum, the oldest rum brand in the world.  Ian Burrell, the Global Rum Ambassador, Ian Burrell, will be teaching visitors about the different styles of rum and giving them the opportunity to create their own bespoke blend with a selection of Caribbean rums.

As this unfolds, there will be  a medley of music including calypso, spouge, contemporary folk, jazz and reggae as some of Barbados’ hottest acts including Arturo Tappin & Band, Cool Breeze DJ, a Barbadian Folk Choir, Red Plastic Bag, Biggie Irie and Nikkita and Jazz, Gospel and R&B vocalists Tamara Marshall, and Marissa Lindsay.

If the food and music doesn’t encourage you to book a holiday to Barbados, then  the  tourist authority’s summer campaign might be the clincher. Called ‘Brilliant Barbados: Kids Stay and Play Free’, the name says it all. Under this campaign, kids 16-years-old or younger stay free in participating hotels and play free at participating attractions when accompanied by at least one paying adult. The offer is valid for travel dates between May 1 and October 31, 2017.
