Time for a trip to Tenerife?

Tenerife.. This is why tourist go. Now Santa Cruz may see more tourists after the new Bourne film opens

Visitors and holidaymakers often visit places where films and television series have been made. A destination is lucky if it gets a couple. Tenerife has had 88 local and international production companies on the island in the last year alone.

Sixteen of these were from the UK. Among the UK productions filmed in Tenerife were BBC’s Doctor Who, whose crew filmed at the volcanic landscapes of UNESCO-listed Teide National Park; ITVBe’s The Only Way is Essex, whose girls enjoyed some sun and cocktails at the upmarket resort of Costa Adeje; Channel 4’s A Place in the Sun; and ITV’s Take Me Out, whose matching couples made the most of the romantic side of the ‘Isle of Fernando’s.’

German television and film companies filmed on Tenerife 24 times and Spanish companies filmed there seventeen times.

All this means that, on average, there was a production company shooting a scene every week on the island and in some cases there were two or more. is it any wonder then that guided tours of where programmes and films were shot is growing? It’s due to the climate because, scenes are rarely interrupted by rain – just like holidays are largely unaffected by it as well.

For the fifth instalment in the Bourne series – Jason Bourne – Matt Damon sent some time on Tenerife filming. When the film opens in late July this year, Tenerife will be seen in a different light from just a beach destination. Some of the action scenes are filmed in the capital, Santa Cruz which will give a different backdrop to New York, London or Prague. Holidaymakers will probably be attracted to spend more time in the capital rather than just head for the beaches.

And surely that is what destinations want wherever they are in the world. More coverage of the parts other programmes don’t show. Tenerife is just lucky that film and television programme makers can find so much of what they want on the island.
