pg-26-christie-paToday is the 125th anniversary of the birth of Agatha Christie, the world’s best selling fiction writer ever.

Devon was where Christie was born and spent most of her life and the Torquay Museum houses the Agatha Christie Gallery, dedicated entirely to the author and her life and works. The gallery is home to many of the author’s personal effects, such as letters and clothes, as well as props from the well-loved television adaptions of her books, including Hercule Poirot’s iconic walking stick and Miss Marple’s outfits. Guests can even step inside Poirot’s study and longue which have been reconstructed inside the gallery.

Her holiday home was Greenway house which is near Brixham. Now run by the National Trust it contains more of Christie’s keepsakes but also those of her husband, the celebrated archaeologist, Max Mallowan. Here, visitors are able to take a glimpse into the house where the writer and her family would spend their summers and Christmases relaxing by the river and playing croquet. The grounds are also home to the infamous ‘Boathouse’ the inspiration for the crime scene in Dead Man’s Folly.

Each year there is an Agatha Christie Festival that is held in Torre Abbey in Torquay and this year, it is timed to coincide with the aniversary. People attending will step away from the festival and wander up the Agatha Christie Mile which takes the curious visitor past the Pavilion where Archie Christie proposed to the young Agatha Miller; the Grand Hotel where she spent her first honeymoon in 1914 just before the end of the year and Torre Gardens where she got some of her inspirations from some of the plants growing there.

A little further afield and you’ll come to the Dartmouth Steam Railwayand a village called Churston. It featured in The ABC Murders. Perhaps more famous is the art deco hotel on Burgh Island Hotel which is separated from the mainland by a tidal beach. It featured in two of her novels, And Then There Were None and Evil Under The Sun. It will be easily recognisable by those who have watched those television adaptations as the hotel was used for shooting.

Devon and Christie – the go together like mystery novel and murder!
