How the outside of the Blues Hall of Fame might look when it opens

Memphis will forever be linked with music. Today, at the Olivier Awards in London and reinforcing that view, Memphis – the Musical which tells the story of a Memphis DJ  who played black music in the 1950’s is up for nine awards. Although there are no direct flights either from the UK or Ireland to the city, it attracts tens of thousands of us to visit.

Graceland – the home of Elvis Presley – is a must for most travellers and this year a new 45 bedroomed hotel opens there. Being linked with Elvis means it couldn’t be just a small hotel. It will possess a 500 seat theatre for live performances which I take to mean musical ones.

Graceland may not be a hall of fame but many treat it as such. Two new physical halls of fame are, however, opening in the city.

The first is the Blues Hall of Fame which opens on May the eighth just after the 36th annual Blues Awards and will have a statue of Little Milton wo died ten years ago this year outside the entrance. Surprisingly, given the success of blues music, this is the first hall of fame bricks and mortar site dedicated to this musical genre and is the idea of the Blues Foundation which was established 35 years ago to mark the best in blues’ music.

On a more general scale, the Memphis Music Hall of Fame opens on Beale Street this year. On the same street there is already the fifteen year old History of Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum and the management of that will administer this new bricks and mortar hall of fame to remind visitors and locals the debt and legacy the city has to music of all sorts.

Yet the city – in addition to these three museums also has the Stax Museum – the museum of American soul music and for those seeking even more, Nashvile is only just over 200 miles away.
