Geneva – a panoramic view from Lake Geneva

At the World Travel Awards held a few days ago, Geneva is Switzerland was given this award by a combination of travel insiders and consumers.

This win marks the first time Geneva has been recognised as Europe’s Leading City Break Destination at the WTA. It beat a number of other cities such as Paris, Madrid, Rome, and London to the top award. And, of course, it is an award based on a competition rather than based on which destination has the highest number of visitors. Putting that aside,  what does Geneva offer that the other cities don’t?

Vincent Dubi, Marketing Director at Geneva Tourism says “Our city has always been synonymous with business – but we are firmly convinced that Geneva is a very attractive leisure destination as well”

It not only has one of the country’s most spectacular landscapes, its watch and clock-making heritage and sits next to a rather large lake but it is famed for its exceptional quality of life. Travellers visiting Geneva are surprised by the facilities and infrastructure the city offers. Geneva Tourism is one of the only European city tourism boards that provide added-value advantages to their city break visitors. Amongst these advantages are convenient transportations to and from the airport as well as free inner-city transportation for Geneva hotel guests, free wifi in the city center and reduced hotel rates during weekends.

One reason not mentioned is that Geneva has one of the oldest tourist offices in the world having been founded in the nineteenth century. By now they will have more experience than many in how to persuade us to add Geneva to the list of holiday destinations.
