Russ Malkin – the man behind adventure travel shows such as Long Way Round, Long Way Down and By Any Means – talks travel

What do you like to do on holiday?
I still like to have an adventurous holiday and over New Years we did a rail adventure to Estonia. In my opinion there is something v romantic about overnight rail trips

Do you know where you’re going this year?
My work is my holiday and this year I’m planning an expedition with the singer Joss Stone…. Although if I did have time to complete a personal ambition it would be the Tran Siberian in the snow!

Of all the places you’ve been to, what was your favourite and why?
I really liked Bolivia because of its history (Bolivia is where Butch Cassidy and Sundance had their shoot out). I also love the ghost towns and the strange plants high up in the Andes and of course the road of death (which isn’t actually that dangerous any more).

Which destination do you wish to travel to, but haven’t yet been?
I would love to visit Columbia.

In your own country, what would you recommend tourists see that isn’t in the travel guides?
People should wild camp on Dartmoor and follow in the footsteps of the hound in the Baskervilles …. Awoooooo!

How do you plan your holiday?
I plan for work meticulously using a range of resources – guides, websites, recommendation. However for myself it’s always last minute and spontaneous but that’s half the fun.

How often do you get away?
I travel as much as I can …. Even if it’s just for one night.

Who do you travel with?
I mainly with my girlfriend Vix or my daughter Emily (both who now have the adventure bug!)

Where do you see tourism in your country, in 10 years?
I think tourism will grow … I hope people take it upon themselves to be adventurous instead of sitting in big shiny coaches and I hope I can inspire people that to do it ‘ your’ way is the most rewarding way to travel.
