Changing Calvia

the beach at Magaluf

In Majorca is Calvia located in the south west corner of the island. And in Calvia is Magaluf that well known party spot for the young and not so young. So prominent has it become that it has its own reality show on TV.

But in the past year the tourist board has worked hard to change the perception of Magaluf and Calvia in general by concentrating on other attractions that would appeal to visitors.

Everyone knows that Majorca has a sunny climate with miles of sandy, inviting beaches (34 in Calvia alone) and clear blue waters lapping those beaches. But the tourist board would have you wishing to visit the area just as much for its hiking and cycling opportunities pointing out that Bradley Wiggins trains every year for a couple of months here.

Although there are six well established resorts in Calvia – Illetes, Magaluf, Palmanova, Paguera, Portal Nous and Santa Ponso – the second named is the one that comes first to people’s minds. The tourist board wants you to consider all six and the attractions that each has.

This year, for example, the strangely named Katmandu Park and Resort opened which combined a theme park with a resort. Next year, there will be more on offer including a kid’s club, a splash park and an underwater-themed woodland! For the sports minded or for those who feel the urge to exercise, there are running tracks, tennis courses in abundance, sailing clubs and golf courses to name just a few. Bike stations are the next thing you can expect to see spring up.

In years to come the promotional tagline might not concentrate on the partying, it might be something like “everybody’s sporting capital of the Med” or “Burn off office blues and enjoy.”
