Derry: one of the best cities in the world

Derry has been named the fourth best city in the world in Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2013 – an annual book highlighting the best places to go and things to do around the world for the year ahead. The book states: “Derry/Londonderry is the UK City of Culture 2013 which means this vibrant historic walled city is undergoing a renaissance.”

Derry was placed as the fourth best city to visit next year by a panel of travel experts, behind San Francisco, Amsterdam and Hyderabad. Derry’s selection was based on its 2013 calendar of cultural events, as the city celebrates the 400th anniversary of its city walls and hosts the prestigious Turner Prize. The book also credits the city’s impressive redevelopment as a reason to consider a visit.

“Derry is a brilliant example of a city that has bounced back from difficult times. This is a city with heart, which shines through in its exciting arts and music scene,” commented Lonely Planet author Tom Hall.
