Olympic logoWhilst the Olympics are on in London, many countries are taking over shops, markets and buildings to promote their countries so we will consider adding them to our future holiday lists. So if you are coming to – or live in – London here are a few places you might want to consider.
Click on the name of each country to learn what events are taking place whilst they are here and what they have on offer
Africa. 53 African olympic commitees are hosting an African village in Kensington Gardens until 12th August. There will be live entertainment from 13.00-15.00 and again from 18.00-21.00 each day and African medal winners will be visiting to display their medals.
Austria. At Trinity House today, they will be turning the place in a snow paradise with events going on until the early evening. Disturbingly, if you can yodel, you can stand a chance of winning a week’s holiday in the Tyrol. If you can’t get to London you can enter by going on the website. Until 12th August their alpine garden will have Austrian beers, food and information about the country
Columbia is in Kensington at the National Geographic shop in Brompton Road, Knightsbridge. They are there until the 16th August
Denmark has moved into St Katherine’s Docks next to Tower Bridge. They opened last Friday and will be there until 12th August. It opens each day at 11am and its free. Its an ideal place to take children as at the moment the theme is Hans Christian Andersen, then Lego and wrapping up with the Vikings. Tthere are free hotdogs everyday, cooking shows and free samples. there is even a big screen so you don’t miss any of the Olympic action and wash it all down with a Carlsberg.
Egypt. Egypt’s celebratory day at the African Village in Kensington Gardens will be on 4th August when there will be dancing, music, different foods to try and a photography exhibition. Free for the public and open from 9am until 10pm
Jamaica will be at the 02 to celebrate Jamaica Summer. This year coincides with fifty years of independence for the country so as well as the 02 being open to all from 4pm each day, celebrations continue until October.
Trinidad & Tobago Culture Fest goes on at the Trycle Theatre in Kilburn up until 25th August.
Virginia. This US state has a three month campaign at the Whole Foods Market in Kensington promoting Virginian wines. Check the website for wine tasting events.
