London can be good value

So London has been named the most expensive city for a night out, according to TripAdvisor’s TripIndex.

The cost of one night’s stay in a four-star hotel, a two-course dinner, cocktails, a bottle of wine and a four-mile return taxi journey in the capital comes to £330 – or so says the travel website.

Is the capital expensive? Of course it is – especially if you stay in a four star hotel. Let’s face facts: London has never been considered a bargain destination by any stretch of the imagination. However it is perfectly possible to have a fab–u-lous time in London town without spending a penny. Big blockbuster sights such as the Tate, Tate Modern, National Gallery and British Museum are all free – as are London’s royal parks and gardens, while walking along the likes of Brick Lane and Portobello Road won’t lighten your wallet (providing you can resist the pressure to splurge on the gorgeous food and fashion wares).

My message? If you want to break out your black Amex, London is certainly a great city to do so but scratch beneath the surface and you’ll find London can definitely be done on a budget.
