Brazilian festival raises the bar on social snacking

When people think of Brazil, they typically think of Carnival, Amazon and amazing beaches. But Brazil is also immensely proud of its bar snacks. To this end, ‘Comida di Buteco’ – an annual competition to find the bar that serves the best ‘new’ snack – kicked off on April 13, within 16 participating cities across Brazil.

Throughout April, over 300 bars will serve up their newly created signature dish with an ice cold beer, in the hope of taking the title of serving the best bar food in their city. Locals and visitors are encouraged to visit the participating bars and opt for their signature dish and then rate the experience, which is then reviewed by specially elected judges, known as “botequeiros”, who decide on the winning bar.

Creativity is the recipe for success, with dishes usually based around one traditional ingredient typically found in the regional cuisine. Past winning dishes have included trout with fried sweet potato, ribs with guava sauce and muscles accompanied by beans, pepperoni and cassava.

This year will see Sao Paulo added to the list of 15 cities that usually host the competition. Belo Horizonte, in the South East of the country, where the competition was originally founded in 1999, remains a traditional favourite host city and has more bars per capita than anywhere in Brazil.

In typical Brazilian fashion, the competition culminates in a spectacular three day awards party in Belo Horizonte called “A Saidera,” or “The Nightcap”, usually attracting up to 35,000 revellers who enjoy the music concerts and dancing which is booked especially for the occasion. The competing bars from around the city attend and serve up their snacks for all to enjoy.  Similar celebrations take place in the other 15 cities hosting the competition.
