It is official: the skies are safe

Yesterday we reported how a record number of Brits are spending Christmas overseas despite the economic woes. One possible explanation is that we are arguably in need of a jolly jaunt more than ever before but the statistics released by the International Transport Association (IATA) could also have played a part.

For the fact of the matter is that 2011 has proved to be the safest year for air travel since records begun. At the time of going to press, the number of passengers and airline crew members killed in air accidents in 2011 stood at 486 – an improvement on 2010, when the figure was 786.

Europe and North America were revealed to have been the safest destinations to travel to in 2011, but the accident rate was reported to have fallen in almost every country.

So if you’re spending part of the festive period ‘up in the air’ you can be guaranteed to have a bon voyage…
