Christmas comes early

By | Category: Travel rumblings

Walking in London’s west end last night, I couldn’t help but notice that Christmas lights and decorations have already been installed!

Word is that John Lewis on Oxford Street has put up more than 4,600 snowballs and 1,000 stars while Westfield shopping centre in Shepherds Bush is busy installing its winter wonderland lights. But John Lewis and Westfield aren’t the first to be festive: this year, both Harrods and Selfridges started selling Christmas decorations in July!

At the risk of sounding like Scrooge, I can’t help think that is madness. I’m all for entering into the festive spirit, but the early start seems absurd coming as it does less than a fortnight after our highest ever October temperature and before Halloween, half term and Bonfire Night.

What do you think? Do you believe – given the economic doom and gloom – that Britain needs an early dose of festive cheer or would you rather we start the shopping and celebrating, nearer the time?
