The great big travel currency rip off

By | Category: Travel rumblings

Consumer Focus has called on the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) to investigate the cost of obtaining foreign currency and the use of credit and debit cards abroad.

About (insert expletive) time!

Purchase your foreign currency on the British high street or at the airport and chances are you’ll find that your bank or credit card provider will impose an unnecessary charge.

But British consumers don’t fare any better when withdrawing cash at ATMs abroad. In addition to the standard withdrawal charge, you’ll be hit by a foreign currency charge as well as interest from the day of the withdrawal. Grrrrrr.

The OFT is to consider the super complaint from Consumer Focus and will publish its response later this year. Fingers crossed!
