Westfield Stratford City – a shiny, supersized £1.45 billion shopping mall next to the 2012 Olympic Village–  opened its doors yesterday, with the help of Nicole Scherzinger  (the hit singer/songwriter and squeeze of Lewis Hamilton).

The US X Factor judge and former Pussycat Doll was joined by pop princess Pixie  Lott (currently topping the UK charts with All About Tonight), TV presenter Nick Grimshaw,  model slash actress Kelly Brook, Mayor Boris Johnson and Olympians including rower Andy Triggs-Hodge and synchronised swimmer Jenna Randall.

Europe’s newest fashion destination saw tens of thousands of shoppers surge into the centre and spend a record £4million. CD Traveller was there to capture the action, on camera…

“I think I prefer the layout at Westfield Shepherd’s Bush, where the shops are set out in a circuit rather than a strip, but as a local resident I am very happy to have Westfield StratfordCity on my doorstep. The selection of shops is excellent and there are plenty of parent areas so wit will be easy for me to come here with the kids. My husband is joining us here tonight for dinner – there’s a brilliant range of restaurants. Overall, I’d give the centre 7/10 – it’s a great addition to East London.

“I love the look of Westfield Stratford: it’s bright and airy. There are a few ‘key’ shops missing like Massimo Dutti and Oasis – both of which the original Westfield in White City has, but Westfield Stratford City has a much better choice of restaurants. I can’t wait to check out Jamie’s Italian. By and large, I am pretty impressed. I came over from the Isle of Man for the opening and would come again. I lived in Dubai for three years – where the shopping mall is king – and Stratford Westfield City wouldn’t be out of place over there.”

The number of shops to have taken up a tenancy. Westfield Stratford City is also home to 70 restaurants (including a Jamie’s Italian), three hotels, an All Star bowling alley, a 17 screen cinema and the UK’s largest casino

The number of permanent jobs that have been created by the opening of Westfield Stratford City, including 10,000 in shops
