Club 55 Returns on ScotRail

By | Category: Travel news

Starting this next Sunday, ScotRail’s Club 55 starts operating again for just five and a half weeks before ending at the end of June.
For those of you who haven’t come across the scheme, it entitles all those of you over 55 to transfer anywhere on ScotRail’s network for £18 return. You don’t have to book in advance or plan. Open the bedroom curtains, see a nice day ahead of you, pop down to the station and head off to wherever takes your fancy on the network.
As with any offer, there are some rules so here they are. Basically, you can’t travel on trains arriving in Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh or Glasgow before 9.30 am on a weekday and you can’t leave Glasgow or Edinburgh stations between the precise hours of 16.42 and 18.09 or the 18.15 service linking Glasgow and Edinburgh. The other restriction is on travelling on East Coast services between Aberdeen and Glasgow and all stations in between on weekends. Click here for the full rules.
Remember to check the normal fare first as you can travel quite far for less than £18 return especially if you have a senior railcard. For example a return from Glasgow to Perth is only £10.15 if you have a senior pass and if not, £15.40 otherwise. ScotRail staff should advise you on the best ticket to buy. But if, say, you are fancied going to Inverness from Edinburgh this would save you about £12.
You don’t have to start in Scotland to take advantage of these fares. Carlisle on the west coast and Berwick-upon-Tweed on the east are the starting points for those south of the border.
At present there are no announcements from other rail companies about operating a Club 55 offer in the next few months but I’m guessing they will return in the Autumn.
