Museums at Night

By | Category: Travel destinations, Travel news

This is more of a reminder than a story. Remember that it is this weekend that museums up and down our countries open in the evenings. Not only do some museums seem different at night, many of those participating have laid on special events as well. Take your pick from over 300 places. Some start tonight, some start tomorrow.

Forget the film, Night at the Museum with Ben Stiller. (But it will be showing at the Elgin Museum for example.) Rivalry won’t cause mayhem during the night as exhibits come to life. Part Halloween, part fun seems to be the agenda for many museums. One thing they will all be trying to prove from tonight is that you shouldn’t consider them stuffy.

Take Newcastle for example. 46 different venues around the city are taking part handing out maps with the all the other places marked and glow sticks to bring a fun atmosphere to the evening. There is a culture crawl around 25 of them. Taking part is Newcastle United and you can go on a guided tour through St James’s Park. There is a design challenge in the Foundry Lane Studios. On Saturday there is even a free bus to link you between most of the venues.

Elsewhere events range from sleepovers the National Media Museum in Bradford, the Historic Dockyard in Chatham and the Museum of Naval Firepower in Gosport to a Dr Who themed evening in the John Rylands Library in Manchester. The Scottish Fisheries Museum in Anstruther is challenging chefs to cook with only local ingredients. Guess who gets to eat the results? Cathedrals and churches can be scary at night and some, along with other buildings put on ghosties and ghoulie evenings such as at Castle Ward House in County Down, Preston Manor in East Sussex, the North Lincolnshire Museum in Scunthorpe and both Herne Bay and Whitstable museums in Kent

For something different what about going to the Bank of England Museum in London and fondling the odd banknote or two or a medieval feast at Dragon’s Hall in Norwich. Seven museums in Dorchester have joined together with one ticket for all so you can experience a number of different events in the evening.
Wherever you go, enjoy yourselves.
