CD Traveller reader, Tom Rumboll, takes us on a tour of his favourite destinations

ibiza club
Ibiza is the kind of place your Mother warned you about. It’s a good time island: a place for the young and hedonistic with a lust for life, fuelled by a sense of danger. You will stay up all night dancing in Space (which in my mind is the best club in the world) to live music from the likes of Zane Lowe and drinking in bars such as Bora Bora and Café Mambo before wandering home along the beach, shoes in hand.

Seldom does a travel destination satisfy the blurbs that shout: something for everyone but Vietnam truly does. Whether you’re looking to poke around ancient ruins, soak in the sun on idyllic beaches, fill your body with banh mi (a crusty baguette stuffed with meat and vegetables) and a bowl of pho (the unofficial national noodle dish), or party till you drop, Vietnam will leave you clamouring for more. And now is the time to before the developers move in and Vietnam suffers the same fate as its South East Asian neighbours, Thailand and Malaysia.

This sun kissed island has, in my opinion, one of the best beaches in the world in West Coast beach. This is where Rhianna (Barbados’ most famous export after rum), hangs out here when she’s not collecting a Grammy. Simon Cowell, Mick Jagger, Tiger Woods, oh and Michael Winner also frequently flock to the West Coast – or the ‘Platinum coast’ as locals like to call it – to laze on beaches of icing sugar sand and swim in crystal clear azure waters. On the West Coast, the toughest decision you’ll make every day is where to eat.

Dubai is exciting and Oman has a certain picturesque charm, but when all is said and done they are Middle East lite. If you want somewhere that matches the Middle East of your imagination, you want Marrakech. With its atmospheric souks (which could keep you contented for days), thriving local gastronomic scene, snake charmers, carpet weavers, street musicians, storytellers and intoxicating smell of spices, Marrakech is truly one of the most magical places on earth. If you can, stay in a traditional riad to ensure a holiday with charm and character.
