It’s time for Africa

At the FIFA World Cup 2010 earlier this year, hip swiveling singing sensation Shakira sang the official anthem with its lyrics “This is our motto, your time to shine. Don’t wait in line. This time for Africa.”

It certainly is Africa’s time. Speaking at World Travel Market (London), representatives from the Africa Travel Association (ATA) revealed that Africa was the only continent to experience tourism growth last year and that Africa receives more tourists than the Caribbean, Central America and South America combined. Who knew?

North Africa attracts over 75 percent of all long haul tourists (Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia) followed by East Africa (Kenya, Mauritius and Tanzania), West Africa (Nigeria and Senegal) and Angola.

The tourism industry in Africa is expected to keep growing – provided it can address its air transport issues (think outdated aiports and expensive airfares) and “make deliberate efforts on regional and national levels to involve our local communities in managing our continent’s natural resources and promoting tourism development,” said Honourable Shamsa Selengia Mwangunga, Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism for the United Republic of Tanzania and the Africa Travel Association.
