West Highland Railway Success

By | Category: Travel news, Travel rumblings

For the second year in a row, readers polled by Wanderlust magazine have named the West Highland Railway the world’s best railway journey which runs from Glasgow to Mallaig. This is how the BBC ran the results of the Wanderlust annual survey into what its readers preferred. They omitted to mention the other awards. It was, unfortunately, the only category in which a UK destination or attraction won a top award. (I don’t include best UK Airport which, obviously, had to be won by a UK entrant! Incidentally, the winner was London City)
The readers of Wanderlust are an adventurous bunch so don’t expect your average destination to feature but their awards are wider than many other awards and more interesting.
Let’s start with the Disservice to Travel awards won by the Met Office for its brilliant weather forecasting achievements. Last years long term summer and this year’s winter forecasts are all that need to be mentioned. The runner up was Unite, the union behind the projected strike action at British Airways. (for a more sympathetic view see the reader comment by Ian in CD-Traveller to the 21st January piece on BA and Easter)
Despite not having a TV series recently, Michel Palin was awarded the Top travel presenter and “Last Chance to see” was named best TV/radio programme.
Dealing with more traditionally named awards, the top city was named Luang Prabang in Laos, (I did say that the Wanderlust readers are not your average holidaymakers), the top destination, Namibia and the top emerging destination was Columbia.
All these awards were announced at the Destination Show in London’s Earls Court which ends today so this is your last chance to meet the Wanderlust team and see the show before it moves to Birmingham next month.
