Security concerns at Cambeltown Airport, taxes, sales and St Bernard’s seem to be to the fore this week. Luckily it is time for the comedy festivals to come along and cheer me up!

On Tuesday I travelled from Carmarthen to Manchester by train. It’s a popular line and the trains get busy. But with all the rain and wind we have had recently, it’s become a bit of lottery.

This morning the Transport Secretary, Justine Greening has gathered media coverage by the shedload. Firstly she suggested that the appointment of First Group to run the west coast rail line would go ahead and secondly that there would be no u-turn on a third runway at Heathrow.

Amid all the brouhaha about Virgin Trains losing the west coast line rail franchise and First Group winning it, not much has been said about what is best for the traveller.

Starting the 30 March, one rail company is introducing standard fares. The price charged for peak fares which is often significantly above those available later in the day has gone. Regardless of what time of the day you travel the fares will be the same price.Such is the claim from the newish company, Wrexham & Shropshire which operates trains from Wrexham, Shrewsbury and Telford in to London. The price will be £53 return from Wrexham and £40 from Shrewsbury and Telford. And these prices will
