Update: 3/10/2017. Yesterday 12,000 people were returned to the UK on planes chartered by the CAA. A similar number are expected today. Most returning passengers say the systems for getting holidaymakers back home is working.

In just over a week’s time, on November 3rd, the new Metrolink service from Manchester Airport will open more than 12 months in advance of the planned date. This nine mile extension to the network runs from St Werburgh’s Road stop in Chorlton through Sale and Wythenshawe to the airport. Following on from the story about the amount of money that airlines make from add-ons, known as ancillary revenue, it makes a pleasant change to write that one airline, Monarch, has taken a different path from others and decided to cut the cost of using a debit card to pay for flights to nothing. Yes that’s right; there will be no charges added to your bill if you use a debit card to pay for any airline tickets if you book on Monarch.
