ecent evidence seems to suggest that a holiday is almost essential and one that we are loathe to give up. If numbers of people taking holidays didn’t substantially drop in the recession when would they? People say the reason is that it gives them a break from everyday routine and the work. People returning to work are said to perform better. Is this true? Are their “medical” benefits in taking a holiday?
In the House of Lords last week, the peer better known as novelist Ruth Rendell asked the government a question about the steps they are taking to promote social tourism. For those of you, like me, who aren’t sure what it is, the government in the shape of Lord Davies of Oldham provided a definition.
Social tourism, he said, is to ensure that that those in society who are less well-off get the opportunity to go on holiday.
So why is it that social tourism exists?
