Today is World Tourism Day

Travel has increasingly been seen as important for a person’s well being Image – Musée Rodin

In the past I have been pretty scathing about the effect that this day has had on us mere mortals.

The travel industry and connected organisations have seemed to hold top-level conferences with politicians and influential people but, for the ordinary man in the street, it passes by with hardly a mention on the news.

In the light of the pandemic the importance of tourism and travel has come to the fore with people suddenly realising how important travel is to their well-being.

That travel has featured has almost nightly in the news bulletins for much of the last eighteen months shows its importance to the economy and how vast sums of money have been lost to destinations because you and I were unable to travel.

Previously the industry and the medical fraternity going back over a couple of hundred years has talked of the benfits or travel either for health reasons or to broaden the mind.

This time the talk has been of well-being, reducing stress and of the rejuvenitive effects after lockdown.

It might have been a boom time for staycations but overseas viusitors were missed. There were still far fewer European visitors to our shores because the UK and the devolved nations adopted stringent rules on who could travel and what restrictions were in place and then often changing the rules with little warning.

Countless jobs have been lost during the pandemic in the travel industry; countless companies have closed down and others are so affected that, but for the news about Canada and the USA re-opening for travellers, they might also have closed.

So this World Tourism Day spare a thought for the industry and people who haven’t come through to the other side of the pandemic for one reason or another.
