Flamingo watching

A bird that I have never seen in the wild is the flamingo.

On many visits to Gammarth in Tunisia, I have missed that time in August when the birds stop off for a few weeks before heading further south.

They also pause in Qatar and I shall not see them there either due to lockdowns. Would I have gone there to see them especially? No, but if I had been visiting Qatar I might have scheduled a holiday or stopover to see them.

Combining a holiday to see both the birds, the world-class useums and the dert during the mild winter (hot by our stadards) and staying in five star accommodation would satisfy many people’s idea of a holiday!

During the pandemic, walking, trekking, cycling and bird-watching have become almost boom pastimes.

More people than I have seen before travelled to the cliff-tops (this was when we were still permitted to travel) and enjoyed the landscapes and the wildlife.

Down on our river where otters can be seen if you are patient enough and kingfishers are regular visitors, there were dozens of people each time I was there whereas normally I only see a handful.

Holidays combining the environment and the wild perhaps along with a desert trek could be popular next year when vaccines should be more widely available and people will be happy to travel again.

What better holiday is there for those who prefer to maintain social distancing for a little longer?
