Going home for Christmas

UPDATE: Following an announcement on 19th December, Christmas travel is limited to Christmas Day.

In the short timeframe that the four governments have given us to see relatives over Christmas the two main options for travel will be on the road or on the rail.

Whichever choice you make, it looks like being a miserable couple of days due to the many millions of us that will try to see loved ones again.

Although many roadworks have been suspended – which they often are at Christmas time, if you drive or take a coach, the travel will be crushed into a much smaller time frame.

Taking the train won’t be much easier because of the social distancing that has to be observed on public transport.

But there was some good news when Avanti West Coast announced that they would suspend peak travelling fares during the Christmas travel window. This is a welcome offer and will be appreciated by those travelling on the line that runs from London, through the Midlands up the North west side of the country and into Scotland. In addition those peak time restrictions that mean you can’t travel on cheap fares at certain times of the day have been removed as well.

In the three days since the announcement, I have been waiting to see if other train companies will follow suit.

So far I have been disappointed.

I have looked at Great Western, Scotrail, Transport for Wales, Greater Anglia, LNER, South Western, Southern, Thameslink, Transpennine, Great Northern, Gatwick Express, and I can’t find that they will follow Avanti West Coast’s decision. Scotrail has even announced a change to peak services which might affect journeys already planned.

At this point I gave up as I couldn’t be bothered to wade through more internet pages to check the situation. My gut feel said that the other train lines are either not going to be as nice with their Christmas cheer as Avanti West Coast.

Of course, they might be still making their minds up but I wouldn’t my pension on a positive outlook for passengers.

I think this year I’ll just stay at home and the relatives can wait a bit longer!
