Why don’t we have more indoor theme parks?

Earlier this week, a new indoor theme park opened in the US state of New Jersey.

Called the Nickelodeon Universe it is located at the American Dream Mall in East Rutherford, New Jersey. (I point out that because it is only 12 miles away from Manhattan in New York so easily visited by those taking a break in the city. It is also easy to get to using public transport – a bus or a train is an option and should cost no more than about $3.)

It has more than 35 rides and attractions including Spongebob Squarepants, Dora the Explorer and other Nickelodeon characters. The park will also have live shows, retail outlets, entertainment, and several restaurants and the Nickelodeon Skyline Scream ride is said to be the tallest indoor spinning drop tower in the world.

All this is in an 8.5 acres park setting.

In the UK we have any number of theme parks but how many are under cover? Sandcastle Waterpark in Blackpool comes to mind but few others do.

But with the success of Center Parcs which have sections under cover and have high occupancy rates why we haven’t had any large under cover theme parks does make you wonder. Especially given our climate where rain is not an uncommon feature.

And to be able to have such indoor park as close to a major city as New York is to the American Dream Mall.

Any landowner with about ten acres near to places like Manchester, London, Leeds, Cardiff, and Glasgow should really sit down and weigh up the financial risk of considering such a venture. Any landowner with about ten acres close to a railway line might also want to consider the benefits as should any seaside resort.

People have been decrying the opportunities in coastal resorts for unemployment outside the main season so this would seem an ideal business for year-round employment.

Blackpool works hard to lengthen the tourist year and Sandcastle helps but why not others?

Given the Coastal Communities Fund was designed to attract regeneration, an indoor theme park would look to be a starter for some entrepreneur.
