Vineyards of the Surrey Hills

By | Category: Travel news

Wine tourism has become increasingly important. Vineyards are no longer just places where vineyards and harvested and bottled. Vineyards are expected to provide other visitor attractions so that a day out seems worthwhile compared to other attractions to which visitors might go.

Denbies near Dorking in Surrey

And that is precisely what five leading vineyards in Surrey are planning to do on the weekend of June the 8h and 9th.

English wine has improved immeasurably since I first sampled it many moons ago. Then it might have been fit to clear out drains but that was about it and if you think I am being a little harsh ask anyone of a certain age and they will confirm it.

Fast forward and English wine can now stand proud against the wine of any country. Sparkling wine from Denbies near Box Hill has outperformed French champagnes in blind tastings so the June events should attract quite a lot of people.

The vineyards have announced the special launch weekend to celebrate the formation of a new English wine region – ‘Vineyards of the Surrey Hills‘. This collection of top producers, located in the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, says that it “offers visitors a fantastic experience – outstanding wines, beautiful views and a warm welcome.”

Visitors on the weekend can choose to take part in a range of different activities at each vineyard; from viewing Sculptures, enjoying music or a picnic in historic gardens, exploring a ‘secret vineyard trail’, sampling a range of wines from tasting bars set in the vineyards, or even participating in a Battle of Waterloo ‘Champagne vs English sparkling taste-off,’ hosted by a master of wine.

Vineyards of the Surrey Hills was recently created to celebrate the excellence of wines grown in this unique area. Nurtured on the chalky limestone hills with the same geology as that of the Champagne region all are easy to reach, and about 20 miles from central London.

The vineyards comprise Denbies Wine Estate, High Clandon Vineyard, Albury Organic Vineyard, Chilworth Manor Vineyard, and Greyfriars Vineyard.
