Taking an Easter break?

By | Category: Travel tips & opinions

Whilst a lot of us will be flying abroad this Easter (easyJet says that it will be flying 150,000 of us tomorrow out of the UK) it might be the Easter of the staycation if figures from Visit England’s “Trip Tracker” survey are to be believed.

It says that 7.4 million Britons are definitely planning an overnight holiday trip in the UK this Easter weekend and that the figure is the highest since this survey began in 2013. Last year, 2018, 4.8 million Brits planned to take an overnight holiday trip during Easter, in 2017 the figure was 6.6 million, in 2016 it was 6.1 million and in 2015 it was 4.6 million.

It means that roads and trains will be busy – if not very busy – this afternoon and tomorrow.

For flights it looks tomorrow is with busy day. easyJet says that it will fly 1.4 million people over Easter and from the UK alone there will be a thousand flights. Just from Gatwick, 58,000 people will fly on that one airline to other UK destinations and Europe with Malaga, Majorca, Faro, Alicante and Barcelona top the list of most popular sunshine destinations this Easter whilst Geneva is the most popular destination for those heading to ski resorts. That seems to support the story we ran yesterday about ABTA’s views over Easter.

Visit England says that of all age-groups holidaying in the UK, it is 16-to-34 year olds who have the lowest growth across all age groups for taking holidays at home during the last decade. It decided to make a last-minute pitch to get them to take a staycation this weekend and it might be supported in that by the bad weather forecast for much of mainland Spain. That might deter last minute bookers especially since the weather in much of the UK is better than it has been for years with temperatures forecast to hit 25 degrees in some places and very little rain if any over the next four days.

For those of – like me – holidaying at home have a look at our list of events over Easter. There will certainly be something near you!

Enjoy yourselves fi you are going away and if you are staying in your own home, enjoy some days out.
