What plans for Airbnb?

By | Category: Travel tips & opinions

Many readers have used Airbnb apartments and rentals over the years. Many other readers have objected to the way that Airbnb seems to drive up rental prices for local. Whatever is said about the company, it has had an effect on tourism

Might more changes be on the way?

Once TripAdvisor was a review site. Now it is a booking site. Once Airbnb was a way for home owners to make some extra cash by renting out their unused rooms. Now it is developing its own accommodation. Is it planning something else?

Last week it hired someone with a background in airlines. According to Airbnb it is building “an end-to-end travel platform that combines where you stay, what you do, and how you get there, all in one place.” But what does that mean? Does it plan an airline, a bus service, a taxi offering, an excursions division, an events platform or is it all just a dose of PR?

The company says that the new hiring is to be responsible for “building partnerships and services that make travel seamless.”

The CEO says, “I’m not interested in building our own airline or creating just another place on the Internet where you can buy a plane ticket, but there is a tremendous opportunity to improve the transportation experience for everyone.”

It sounds to me as though, at some point in the future when you book an Airbnb rental, the company will turn around and off you things like a discounted flight if you travel on an airline with which it has a deal, excursions, transfer from you arrival point to you rental or even a train deal if you are renting in the same country where you live.

If they plan on doing that and will package one or more items of your trip will that mean that Airbnb will come under 2018 Package Travel Regulations?
