Those living outside Scotland might imagine there was just one Highland Games and that would be the one that the Royal Family usually attends.

Not so. There are well over sixty throughout the Highlands and most of those are held from spring until late summer. And that is just in Scotland. There are dozens of other Highland Games that take place in Canada, New Zealand and, of course the USA.

One of the first of the year happens this coming Sunday at Gordon Castle in Fochabers.  In only eight years this family oriented highland gathering has developed so that it attracts about 10,000 people to the castle to enjoy and take part in the activities.

Yes , many come to see traditional events such as  caber tossing, the tug o’ war and highland dancing but others come from the pipe bands and the atmosphere. This year Gordon castle will see a world-record attempt with the 28lb Weight for Distance Championships

Headlining the country sports arena, Pedal Power Vs Parkour combines the incredible skill, balance and power of a trials rider, the intricate tricks of a BMX rider and the finesse of a gymnast to create the only show of its kind in the UK.  In addition the arena will feature Indian Runner Duck performers Drakes of Hazard, Mordor Gundogs, Ore Country Terriers and Speyside Falconry!

In the Music Marquee the attraction has been brought under one roof and headlining the stage is award-winning folk band Elephant Sessions, winners of the Scots Trad Music Awards Album of the Year 2017. The band will be supported by talented local musicians.

Showcasing the finest food in Speyside, delicious, local food concessions will also be available throughout the castle grounds. For gin lovers, the Gordon Castle Gin bar will continue to be a popular feature in the Castle’s orangery as it showcases the estate’s award-winning botanical gin.
