The package holiday revival

Benidorm tops the bookings list at

According to data released by, bookings of package holidays surged 28% in the UK in 2017 compared to 2016, and this trend has continued into 2018, with package holiday bookings growing a rapid 38% in January and February compared to last year.

What has brought about this resurgence in package holidays? suggests that beach-based TV shows, such as Ex on the Beach (filmed on the Costa del Sol in 2018), Benidorm, Love Island and 5* Hotel have contributed to renewed interest in nostalgic beach resorts in the Spanish Costa’s, Greek islands and the Algarve in Portugal. This is amplified, they say, by a recent WTM survey done fro the World Travel Market which states that 1 in 10 people now book holidays based on TV shows. says “the much-maligned “package holiday” is enjoying an unexpected renaissance and holiday destinations that were popular in the 1990’s are making a strong comeback. In truth the package holiday interest has been strongish for years and has been made stronger by holiday company collapses which have made people seek the security of ATOL bonding. The beach element of package holidays has always been there. Could it be that is just reaching wider audience than it has done in the past?

From –and solely from – their booking statistics, they say that the top ten popular destinations this coming summer are Benidorm in  Spain, Albufeira in Portugal, Nice in France, (not really a package holiday destination I would have thought,) Magaluf in Mallorca, San Antonio de Portmany on Ibiza, Playa Blanca on Lanzarote, Alcudia in Mallorca, Torremolinos, Puerto de la Cruz in Tenerife and Palmanova  in Mallorca.

With three spots in the top ten it looks as if Mallorca will be pretty busy with holidaymakers this year!
