Yes, Tenerife wins again as the most popular destination for Christmas overseas breaks

Today is the supposed to be the busiest day of the holiday period as we fly, drive or catch the ferry.

The RAC says that between 4and 8pm tonight will be the busiest time on the roads although I am aware that many offices are closing at lunchtime.  They estimate that 20 million cars will be on the roads during the festive season.

One piece of good news for travellers. Virgin Trains says planned strikes today and on four days in January by the RMT and TSSA unions on Virgin Trains West Coast have been called off.

The ferries to Ireland are expecting to have their busiest day of the year and airports will be busy.  Eurostar will carry a couple of hundred thousand people across to Europe. ABTA says that 4.5 million of us will leave the UK with over a million people of us flying from Gatwick, 525,000 from Stansted, 480,000 from Manchester, 330,000 from Luton, 226,000 from Edinburgh and over 30,000 from Cardiff.

But where are we going? It looks like we are heading to the usual suspects. The Canary Islands, Antalya in Turkey and Hurghada in Egypt are favourites along with, for long haul travellers, Mexico and the Dominican Republic.

According to one company, Traveltek, Londoners’ first choice is Miami in Florida whilst the Scots prefer Tenerife. Their figures are based on looking at all flight bookings out of major UK airports between December 18 and 24 2017, while data on London airports, Scottish airports, Manchester Airport and several international air hubs have also been compiled to determine specific booking patterns for each market.

They say that New York is the most popular destination followed by Barcelona, Tenerife, Miami, Malta Alicante, Lanzarote, Amsterdam, Malaga and Dubai.

Regional breakdowns reveal the top three Christmas destinations for Londoners are Miami, New York and Barcelona, while travellers out of Manchester are opting for New York, Tenerife and Miami, and Scots are departing for Tenerife, Miami and Barcelona this Christmas
