Saving time for skiing

This coming winter, a new Irish airline called powdair will link Luton, Southend, Southampton, Bristol, Manchester and Edinburgh airports with Sion in Switzerland.

Why is this of more than usual interest?

Because Sion is in the heart of the Valais region of Switzerland which, for skiers, means that the travelling time to resorts like Zermatt, Verbier, (45 minutes away) Saas Fee, Crans Montana  (30 minutes away) and Nendaz (25 minutes) will be much shorter than the traditional way of flying into Geneva and then taking connecting coach services or driving. Zermatt is only half the distance compared with having to travel from Geneva.  Even Chamonix is only about the same distance away in time from Sion as it is from Geneva so the new routes provide an alternative to the Geneva flights. Flying into a smaller airport usually means a quick exit from an airport!

Transfer options from Sion Airport to onward destinations are available to book at the point of ticket purchase including shared and private journeys to the major resorts in the region so one transaction can complete the journey.

For the skier, the other important feature of the new airline is that you don’t have to pay an additional fee to take skis with you. It’s all included in the one price and tickets are already on sale.

Flights start on December 14.
