Lisbon or…

From next month, some passengers travelling on TAP, the Portuguese airline will be able to have a free five day stopover in Lisbon or Porto whilst on their way to their final destination.

Airlines and destinations have been offering free tours to passengers for some time especially if the transit time is over 4, 5 or 7 hours but they tend to be places in the Far East and involve long-haul flights, In Europe it is still unusual for any such offer to be available.

A year ago, TAPA introduced a free stopover and some 70,000 people from around the world have taken advantage of it. The success has persuaded the airline to modify the offer.

If you flying from outside Europe you may be eligible for a stopover of up to five days from next month. If you are flying from the UK or Ireland then you may have a 24, 48 or 72 stopover either in Porto or Lisbon as you fly elsewhere on TAP.

Say, for example, that you are having a late summer sunshine holiday in the Algarve. Pick a flight that goes via Porto and Lisbon, check with the airline that you are entitled to the stopover and book. The airline will charge you no more to fly on to Faro in the Algarve after your break.

In fact there are other tourist organisations that have signed up to the scheme so, pick one of those and you have the opportunity for discounted hotel stays, participating restaurants will provide a free bottle of Portuguese wine when you buy a meal and you can have free entry to some museums or attractions.

Both Lisbon and Porto can easily occupy your time for three days and both figure highly in the lists of top ten city break destinations. TAP flies from Gatwick, Heathrow, London City (from the end of October) and Manchester.
