In the Chinese calendar, this year it is the Year of the Rooster and, although it may still be a few weeks away, here are two celebrations that are away from the normal parades and fun that you see in the China town areas of our cities.

It is all courtesy of the Chinese owned Hainan Airlines who have got together with both Manchester Airport and John Lewis in Birmingham. That it also publicises the airline which it has direct links to China from both places goes without saying.

Why in particular did the airline chose Manchester and Birmingham? Because from both places nearly 100,000 people travelled to China last year making them prime candidates to consider a direct flight from each place rather than heading down to London for the flights.

Hainan Airlines and Manchester Airport will also be hosting an instore event on 21st and 22nd January where shoppers can sample the airlines business class product and be treated to Chinese window displays and entertainment.

The event in Birmingham will take place between 6-9pm on Wednesday 18th January at the In House Bar in House of Fraser, Birmingham.

As well as Chinese entertainment, drinks and canapes, there will also be two return flights to Beijing to be won on the evening.

Both events are free but you need to register in advance by going to www.hainanchinesenewyear.eventbrite.co.uk.

According to China Travel Guide, the largest Chinese land tour operator in the country, “Rooster is almost the epitome of fidelity and punctuality” and that “in Chinese culture, another symbolic meaning of chicken… is exorcising evil spirits.”

The Year of the Rooster begins on January 28th.
