Gwithian in Cornwall. Whether you are holiday at home or abroad, the sales might persuade you to look elsewhere…

Boxing Day doesn’t just mean sales at furniture and fashion retailers although from watching Christmas television you could believe so.

The airlines and tour operators are out there trying to tempt you with sales to book your travel and holidays with them. One, Expedia, had a 72 hour sales a week before Christmas in an attempt to hoover up as much of the market as possible. You may not realise it but Expedia is one of the biggest tour operators/ holiday companies in the UK.

The easyJet sale began before Christmas and still continues apace with a 20% discount of 400,000 seats. British Airways has a sale it calls “The Unforgettable Sale” which lasts until the end of January and Virgin Atlantic has a sale on at the moment as well. Its holiday division, Virgin Holidays also has a sale.

Qatar airlines has a promotion on until the 3rd of January for flights until November 2017 and Jet 2 has a 10% sale for summer flights in 2017 but Monarch’s sale only started today.

It isn’t just airlines who have sales. You will have seen the Thomson and Thomas Cook adverts that started before Christmas and Thomson doesn’t call their offers a sale but they do have summer deals which amounts to something pretty similar. Their Irish subsidiary – Falcon Holidays – does have a sale on as do some of their other brands like Citalia, Hayes & Jarvis and Austravel. Thomas Cook on the other hand does have a summer sale running as does Kuoni urging you to “travel out of the ordinary.”

Flight Centre is offering up to 30% off on certain flights and On the Beach is offering a similar discount off flights.’s sale began before Christmas and, although it is called a New Year’s Sale it lasts up until the end of January.

Opodo is celebrating its 15th birthday and has some sales off holidays as well as the airline sales that are around. Warner Leisure Hotels has a half-price Boxing Day sale but Saga restricts itself to 10% off or value-added offers like parking discounts. Butlin’s and Pontins don’t really have a sale just a range of offers and Center Parcs is the same.

That is just a selection of the sales. Don’t opt for one because the percentage discount looks high. Compare a few offering holidays to the destination that you want.  Then,  look to see what added benefits they have. For example, some airlines like Qatar offer 30kgs of hold baggage against the normal 20 or some that offer a good price until you add on luggage, food, a seat number and a range of other things.

Good luck in the sales!
