It’s the great getaway day today; BA strike is off

Playa Juanillo in the Dominican Republic will be one of the Caribbean popular spots for British tourists this holiday time.

As 12 million of us hit the roads today the good news is that the strike at British Airways has been called off by the unions since BA has submitted a new pay deal for consideration. In all, ABTA estimates that 4.5 million of us will travel abroad and half that number will be by people exiting Gatwick, Heathrow, Luton and Stansted airports.

Elsewhere you can still expect some disruption just because of the sheer number of us hit the roads. Not all will be flying away where Virgin Atlantic still has a work to rule but it may take you longer to get to the airport.

When you get there expect longer queues before you head off to join your plane.

It will surprise few of you to know that the Canaries are the most popular destination for those exiting the UK.  Long haul it looks like the Caribbean, and in particular Jamaica and the Dominican Republic are the most popular with Dubai, Goa and Cape Verde in the other direction being popular. For those heading for a city break, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Dublin and New York seem the most popular.

But the vast majority of us will holiday in the UK and Ireland, seeing relatives or taking a short break.

With Storm Barbara having the potential to make getting to Scotland and Northern Ireland a little problematic so allow extra time in case road conditions deteriorate. The west of England may be hit as well by strong winds. Yesterday the main roads into Devon and Cornwall saw a bit more traffic than expected as some sought to beat the weather forecasted problems that may come today.

As for Christmas here at home, it looks like being very mild with temperatures in the mid-teens and little snow unless you are on very high ground.
