Where the experts holiday: Mirko Lagattolla

By | Category: Travel tips & opinions

Former corporate director, Mirko Lagattolla, spent several years travelling around the world in more than 15 countries for work and leisure. Mirko, who has also advised numerous hospitality businesses now runs GLEAT – a new organisation that connect travellers with Londoners over an authentic meal, on demand. Here the food and travel expert shares his experiences with Just About Travel readers

What do you like to do on holiday?
I really enjoy become local in everything I do. Especially when it comes to dining out, I am always looking forward the place where locals hangout, who doesn’t? And yes, I want to GLEAT as much as I can :). The picture below is literally the farm house of a man (red circle) living in the middle of nowhere in Sardinia!

Where did you last go?
Over the last five years or so, the word ‘holiday’ has become a bit confusing for as I have been travelling extensively for work. I guess I would say that my last holiday was in Sardinia, sailing a boat –  it was amazing as you can see from the previous picture!!

Do you know where you’re going this year?
Usually I don’t tend to plan very far ahead but I know that I will be in Barcelona in June (a small gift to my Mum and my son). I’m also putting together a trip for eight people to discover the hidden parts of Puglia, this summer.

Of all the places you’ve been to, which was your favourite and why?
Paris. If you know a little French, it’s a really great place where you have all you can ask for in a metropolis.

Which destination do you wish to travel to, but haven’t yet been?
Anywhere that is remote and unplugged from the ‘advanced’ world. Places like Nepal, Mongolia and Azerbaijan would all feature highly on my wish list.

In your own country, what would you recommend tourists see that isn’t in the travel guides?
Tourists tend to visit Venice, Milan, Rome and Florence… but trust me, you have to see Puglia. From north to south, it’s a breathtaking region. Do reach out (
mirko.lagattolla@gleat.me), if you’d like to be part of the Puglia trip that I’m organising this summer..

How do you plan your holiday?
I don’t tend to plan much – I usually just pick a location based on the moment and around family/work constraints.

How often do you go away?
I try to get away at least once a month.

Who do you travel with?
It varies. Sometimes I travel solo, sometimes with my partner and on other occasions, with friends.

Where do you see tourism in your country, in 10 years?
Italy really is a country where the quality of life is unbeatable. I see tourism in 10 years transforming in localism. Travellers (not tourists) enjoying the time with locals everywhere they go and in everything they do. Travellers GLEATing around is my vision. This will show travellers why Italy is called il bel paese  (the beautiful country).
The picture below is not in a fancy ‘touristic’ restaurant, but at my home dinner table!
